Biography:
Édouard Thomas Charton was a French journalist, director of publications, and politician. He was born in Sens, France on May 11, 1807, and died in Versailles, France on February 27, 1890. Charton was a Saint-Simonian and a republican who was known for his work in the field of journalism and his contributions to the vulgarization of knowledge through illustrations. He founded the magazine Le Magasin pittoresque and served as its editor-in-chief for fifty years. Charton was also a member of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques and the Société de l'histoire de Paris et de l'Île-de-France. He was married to Marie-Louise Saglio and was the father-in-law of Edmond Saglio, a French archaeologist.
