Biography:
Alexei Kondratievich Savrasov was a Russian landscape painter, considered to be one of the founders of the Russian lyrical landscape. He was born in Moscow in 1830 and studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under the guidance of Maxim Vorobiev. In 1852, he became a member of the Peredvizhniki movement, a group of realist painters who sought to bring art to the people and to depict everyday life in a truthful and unidealized manner. Savrasov's early works were characterized by their attention to detail and their focus on the natural world. In the 1860s, he began to develop a more poetic and expressive style, which is exemplified by his painting 'The Rooks Have Returned' (1871). He was also known for his paintings of the Russian countryside, such as 'The Grave of the Artist's Wife' (1873) and 'The Sunset on the Volga' (1871). Savrasov's later works were more somber in tone, reflecting his own personal struggles and the changing political climate in Russia. He died in Moscow in 1897.
