Biography:
Andrej Janez Herrlein was a Slovenian painter and drawing master. He was born in Kleinbardorf, Germany in 1738 and died in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 1817. In 1778 he was appointed drawing master at an elementary school in Ljubljana. He painted religious pictures and portraits, the best known of which is the so-called portrait of Julija Primic and her Little Brother. In 1786 he painted the ceiling of the staircase of the Gruber Palace in Ljubljana in oils (Allegory of Trade, Crafts and Technology). Four views of Ljubljana are also known. Herrlein’s style is embedded in the Baroque tradition of the late 18th century. His work is to be found in the Narodna galerija, the Narodni muzej and the Mestni muzej in Ljubljana, in private collections and churches in Ljubljana and its environs, as well as in the Dolenjska (South-East) and Primorska (South-West) areas of Slovenia.
