Silva Porto's artistic journey began under the tutelage of João António Correia and Tadeu de Almeida Furtado in his hometown. He later continued his studies in Paris, where he was influenced by the Barbizon School, a naturalist movement that emphasized the accurate depiction of everyday life.
While in Paris, Silva Porto exhibited his work at the Salon and the World's Fair of 1878. His association with João Marques de Oliveira, a fellow pupil under Adolphe Yvon and Alexandre Cabanel, further solidified his naturalist leanings. Upon returning to Portugal in 1879, Silva Porto became one of the most acclaimed naturalist painters of his generation, drawing inspiration from Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and Charles-François Daubigny.
