The company's bicycles were known for their quality and durability, and the Schwinn name became synonymous with American-made bicycles. In 1992, Schwinn declared bankruptcy and was restructured. In 2001, the company again declared bankruptcy and was purchased by Pacific Cycle, which is now owned by the Dutch conglomerate, Pon Holdings.
