Biography:
Atanasije Popović, also known as Atanasije Antonijević, was a Serbian archpriest of Bukovik born in Trebinje, Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1885. He is known for blessing Karađorđe and the insurgents in Orašac in 1804 which precipitated the Serbian Revolution. He took part not only in the preparation of the First Serbian Uprising and thereafter prosecuting warfare but also in the process of the restoration of the Serbian state. He is remembered as one of the best champions of Orthodoxy in literature. Popović studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and became the first academically trained artist from Trebinje. He died in Dubrovnik, Croatia in 1948.
