Dörte Helm-Heise, also known as Dorothea Helm and Dörte Helm-Heise, was a German artist, painter, graphic designer, and weaver associated with the Bauhaus movement. Born in Berlin-Wilmersdorf in 1898, she was the daughter of classical philologist Prof. Dr. Rudolf Helm and his Jewish wife Alice Caroline, born Bauer.

Early Life and Education

In 1910, Dörte moved with her family to Rostock, where she attended the Lyceum and later the School of Applied Arts. From 1915 to 1918, she studied at the Kunsthochschule Kassel, and in 1918/1919, she attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Weimar. Her education and training laid the foundation for her future career as a versatile artist.

Career and Contributions

In 1919, Dörte became an apprentice in the mural and textile workshop at the State Bauhaus Weimar, where she studied under renowned artists such as Johannes Itten, Lyonel Feininger, Oskar Schlemmer, Georg Muche, and Walter Gropius.
