Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar was a Colombian painter and sculptor born in Pamplona, Colombia in 1922. He is considered a pioneer of abstract, minimalist, and Constructivist art in Colombia and Latin America. Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar’s artistic development was influenced by his early experiences in his father's jewelry studio and his exposure to European avant-garde artwork during a trip to Popayán with sculptor Édgar Negret in 1947.
was born on August 27, 1922, in Pamplona, Norte de Santander, to parents Adela Villamizar and Jesús Ramírez Castro. He was the youngest of eleven children. His father was a jeweler, and his first experiences making visual art took place in his father's studio. In 1940, he moved to Bogotá to study architecture at the National University of Colombia, though he changed his focus to painting in 1944.
After a trip to Machu Picchu, Peru, Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar took inspiration from Inca culture to create Constructivist art. His work is characterized by its vibrant colors, bold brushstrokes, and a deep connection to nature and Colombian culture. One of his most famous paintings is Custody, a metal artwork created in the style of abstract and minimalist art.
