Biography:
Entsū, also known as Entsū Zenji, was a Japanese Zen Buddhist monk born in Japan in 1754 and passed away in 1834. He was a scholarly monk of the Tendai sect in the late Edo period, known for his work in Buddhist astronomy. Entsū was particularly interested in the Cosmic Mt. Sumeru of Indian origin and wrote several works on the subject, including the 'Bukkokurekishōhen'. He also devised his own ritual instruments such as the Shumisengi and Shukushōgi that visually expressed Buddhist astronomical theories. Entsū's work in Buddhist astronomy was passed on to his disciples Kanchū Zenki and Kōgan.
