Biography:
Epifanio Garay y Caicedo was a Colombian artist born in Bogotá on January 9, 1849. He was a painter, singer, and art chronicler. Garay studied at the College of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Academy of Music. He married Mercedes Díaz Remón in 1872 and had two children. In 1885, he fled to Paris due to the civil war in Colombia and studied at the Académie Julians. Upon his return to Colombia, he founded a painting academy in Cartagena. Garay is considered the most important portraitist of Colombian art. He died in Villeta, Cundinamarca, Colombia, on October 8, 1903.
