Erich Consemüller was a German photographer and architect who played a significant role in the development of the Bauhaus art school. Born in 1902 in Bielefeld, Germany, Consemüller's life was marked by his passion for photography and architecture.

Early Life and Education

Consemüller began his training in carpentry and attended evening classes at the Bielefeld School of Arts and Crafts, now the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences. In 1922, he joined the Bauhaus in Weimar, where he studied under renowned artists such as Johannes Itten, Paul Klee, and Wassily Kandinsky.

Career at Bauhaus

Consemüller's time at Bauhaus was marked by his collaboration with other notable artists, including Lucia Moholy. He worked on various projects, including the interior design of the Theatre Cafe in Dessau and the ADGB Trade Union School project in Bernau bei Berlin. Consemüller's photographic skills were also utilized to document the school's activities and environment, resulting in around 300 photographs. Some of his notable works include "Bauhaus Scene", which features a woman sitting in Marcel Breuer's Wassily Chair, wearing a theatrical mask made by Oskar Schlemmer and a dress designed by Lis Beyer-Volger. His photographs are now held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Tate.

Post-Bauhaus Career

After leaving Bauhaus, Consemüller worked in various architectural offices, including Hans Wittwer's office in Halle. He also taught at the Kunstgewerbeschule Burg Giebichenstein in Halle, now the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design. Consemüller's career was marked by his dedication to Bauhaus principles and his commitment to documenting the school's activities.

Legacy
