Early Life and Training

François Jean Sablet

, a Swiss-born French painter, was born on November 23, 1745, in Morges, Switzerland. He studied with his father, Jacob Sablet, a painter and picture dealer, before moving to Paris in 1772. In Paris, he and his younger brother Jacques-Henri Sablet both studied at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture as pupils of Joseph-Marie Vien.

Artistic Career

Sablet's artistic career spanned multiple genres, including portraiture, genre scenes, and mythological subjects. He was known for his portraits of middle-class clients and their children, which showcased his ability to capture the essence of his subjects. As a Revolutionary, he produced several portraits during the French Revolution, including Joseph-Agricol Viala, William Tell, and Lycurgus.
