Early Life and Education

Gerhard Richter

He grew up in Reichenau, Lower Silesia (now Bogatynia, Poland), and Waltersdorf (Zittauer Gebirge), in the Upper Lusatian countryside. Richter's father, Horst Richter, was a mathematics and physics student at the Technische Hochschule in Dresden.

Artistic Career

Richter began his artistic journey as an apprentice to a sign painter and later studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. His early work was influenced by the styles of Picasso and Jean Arp, which is evident in his abstract and photorealistic paintings. In 1957, Richter worked as a master trainee in the academy, taking commissions for the then state of East Germany.
