Gilbert Prousch, also known as Gilbert Proesch, was born on September 17, 1943, in San Martin de Tor, Italy. He studied art at the Sëlva School of Art in Val Gardena, Hallein School of Art in Austria, and the Akademie der Kunst in Munich. George Passmore was born on January 8, 1942, in Plymouth, United Kingdom. He dropped out of regular school at the age of fifteen and studied art at Dartington College of Arts and Oxford School of Art. The two first met on September 25, 1967, while studying sculpture at Saint Martin's School of Art and have been collaborating as the art duo Gilbert & George ever since.
Gilbert Prousch & George Passmore are known for their formal appearance and manner in performance art and their brightly colored graphic-style photo-based artworks. Their artistic style is a unique blend of surrealism, pop art, and conceptual art. They have been working together for over 50 years, creating innovative and thought-provoking art pieces that challenge the viewer's perception.
