Biography:

Gilles Rousselet, also known as Aegidius Rousselet, was a French burin engraver, print dealer, and draftsman, active during the Baroque-era. Born in 1610 in Paris, France, he is considered one of the most skilled engravers of the seventeenth century. Rousselet's work was often a reproduction of works by other artists, including Grégoire Huret, Claude Vignon, Jacques Stella, Laurent de La Hyre, Raphael, Pietro da Cortona, Guido Reni, Valentin de Boulogne, and Nicolas Poussin.

Early Life and Career

Rousselet married in 1645 to Judith Le Goux in the Saint-Nicolas-des-Champs church, and together they had fourteen children. He was the father of sculptor, Jean Rousselet. Rousselet's engraving work was inspired by Abraham Bloemaert, and he is known for his reproductions of works by other artists. Unlike many of the known engravers of the 17th century, who created their own original artworks, Rousselet's work was primarily focused on reproducing the works of others.

Admission to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture

In 1663, Rousselet was admitted to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, an honor that recognized his skill as an engraver. He exhibited his works at the Salons exhibition of 1664 and of 1673, showcasing his talent to a wider audience. Rousselet's admission to the Académie was supported by Charles Le Brun, a prominent artist and member of the Académie.
