Biography:

Gregorio Vásquez Arce y Ceballos, also known as Gregorio Vásquez de Arce, was a Spanish Neogranadine painter and one of the leading artists of the Hispanic American Baroque movement. He painted during an era dominated by the style baroque hispano-american which extended from the mid 17th to the late 18th century in the Viceroyalty of New Granada.

was born on May 9, 1638, in Bogotá, Colombia. He received art classes in the St Bartolome College and as an apprentice of the painter Baltasar Vargas de Figueroa. This training helped him develop his skills and style, which would later become characteristic of the Hispanic American Baroque movement.

Artistic Style and Works

The artwork of Gregorio Vásquez Arce y Ceballos depicts scenes from the life of Christ, Virgin Mary, and Saints. Some of his notable works include Joachim of Fiore shows the portraits of Saint Dominic de Guzmán and Saint Francis of Assisi, which can be found in the Colonial Museum (Bogotá, Colombia). Later Life and Legacy

In 1701, Gregorio Vásquez Arce y Ceballos was involved in the kidnapping of Doña María Teresa de Orgaz from the Santa Clara Convent. This led to his imprisonment and subsequent poverty. He never painted again and eventually died on August 6, 1711, in Bogotá. In 1863, the Colombian government placed a commemorative plaque in the house where Gregorio Vásquez Arce y Ceballos was born and died.
