, a renowned Turkish artist, was born in 1852 in the district of Beylerbeyi, Istanbul, Turkey. He was the son of Ferit Selim Paşa, director of the Imperial Artillery Arsenal. Halil Paşa's family originally hailed from Rhodes, and his father, Selim, was one of the founders of the Turkish Military Academy. Halil Paşa enrolled in the Imperial School of Military Engineering in 1869 and graduated as a lieutenant in 1873. His artistic talent was recognized by the director of the Military Academy, who appointed him as an assistant art teacher.
