Biography:

Hendrik Valkenburg received his first drawing lessons at the Drawing School in Deventer and then at the Academy in Antwerp. He painted genre paintings, portraits and landscapes. He was also a teacher and taught at the Academy of Antwerp and the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. He was a member of the Pulchri Studio in The Hague and the Hollandsche Teekenmaatschappij in Amsterdam. He exhibited his works at various exhibitions, including the Salon in Paris and the World Exhibition in Vienna in 1873. He was awarded a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876. He was also a member of the jury at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1889. He was a prolific artist and produced a large number of works during his career. He died in The Hague in 1896.
