Inimá José De Paula, also known as Inimá de Paula, was a renowned Brazilian painter and draftsman born on December 7, 1918, in Itanhomi, Minas Gerais, Brazil. He passed away on August 13, 1999, in Belo Horizonte, also located in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Inimá de Paula was known for his strong and vibrant colors in his paintings, earning him the nickname 'the Brazilian fauve'.
Inimá de Paula studied at various institutions such as the Núcleo Antônio Parreiras in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, Liceu de Artes e Ofícios do Rio de Janeiro, Académie de la Grande Chaumière and École Normale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He also attended classes with renowned artists such as André Lhote and Gino Severini.
Inimá de Paula had his first solo exhibition at the Instituto dos Arquitetos do Brasil (IAB/RJ) in 1948, thanks to the support of Candido Portinari. He won several awards throughout his career, including a trip to Brazil and an international trip through the Salão Nacional de Belas Artes (SNBA) and the Salão Nacional de Arte Moderna (SNAM), respectively. In 1954, he moved to Paris where he lived for two years before returning to Brazil.
Upon his return to Brazil, Inimá de Paula began painting abstract works that were later exhibited at the 5th São Paulo Biennial. In the early 1960s, he settled in Belo Horizonte and returned to figurative painting.
