Biography:

Irie Shikai was born in Tsukushi, Fukuoka Prefecture, and studied prose and poetry under the great scholar Masuyama. Later, he studied painting under Kubota Beisen. Irie Shikai is known to have been involved with the ultranationalist politician Mitsuru Tôyama (1855-1944), but this involvement was fairly short-lived and he soon returned to his artistic pursuits. He was known for his neo-nanga style landscapes and was associated with the Kyoto school of painting. Irie Shikai died in 1940.
