, a renowned French painter and sculptor, was born on May 11, 1824, in Vesoul, Haute-Saône. He received his early instruction in drawing from local artist Claude-Basile Cariage. In 1840, he moved to Paris to study under Paul Delaroche, and later attended the École des Beaux-Arts.

Rise to Fame

Gérôme's painting The Cock Fight (1846) gained him a third-class medal at the Paris Salon in 1847. This work was seen as the epitome of the Neo-Grec movement, and it launched his career. He became one of the most influential teachers of his time, with students including Thomas Eakins, John Singer Sargent, and Mary Cassatt.
