João Maria Paulo Varela Gomes was a Portuguese military officer and revolutionary who fought against the Estado Novo regime. He was born on May 25, 1924, in Lisbon, Portugal, and died on February 26, 2018. Varela Gomes was a key figure in the resistance movement against the dictatorship of António de Oliveira Salazar. He participated in several plots to overthrow the government, including the failed coup attempt in Beja in 1961.
