Biography:

João Maria Paulo Varela Gomes was a Portuguese military officer and revolutionary who fought against the Estado Novo regime. He was born on May 25, 1924, in Lisbon, Portugal, and died on February 26, 2018. Varela Gomes was a key figure in the resistance movement against the dictatorship of António de Oliveira Salazar. He participated in several plots to overthrow the government, including the failed coup attempt in Beja in 1961. Varela Gomes was also involved in the Carnation Revolution in 1974, which led to the end of the Estado Novo regime. Throughout his life, Varela Gomes remained committed to the cause of democracy and freedom, and he is remembered as a hero of the Portuguese resistance movement.
