Redfern & Sons was a British tailoring firm founded by John Redfern in Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1855. The company developed into a leading European couture house with branches in London, Edinburgh, Paris, and New York by the early 1890s. The Paris extension was operated as a couture establishment, while the other branches functioned primarily as tailors and importers. Redfern Ltd. was known for its tailoring, dressmaking, and the industrial production of clothing. The company is credited with the invention of the tailored suit for women in 1885. Redfern Ltd. was a prolific and prestigious fashion house in France, England, and the United States, and a signature incontournable of the mode of the time. The Parisian branch closed in 1929, and the company finally closed in 1932.
