His early lessons in drawing were under the guidance of his uncle, José Díez Palma, a professor at the University of Salamanca. From 1900 to 1904, Gutiérrez Solana studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando and received an honorable mention at the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes in 1906.
Gutiérrez Solana is generally considered an Expressionist, but his style was heavily influenced by El Greco, the Black Paintings of Goya, and the works of Eugenio Lucas Velázquez. His unique blend of styles resulted in a distinctive approach to capturing the essence of Spanish culture.
