Lê Phổ was a Vietnamese painter who was born in Vietnam in 1907 and died in France in 2001. He is known for his stylized depictions of nudes, gardens, and floral still lifes. His work is often divided into three distinct styles, with the first being from his period in Hanoi and his first couple years in Paris, the second being his Romanet period, and the third being his Findlay Period. He is considered one of the most versatile artists of the 20th century, with his work being recognized for its ability to merge Impressionism, Surrealism, and traditional Chinese influences. He is also known for his depictions of Vietnamese women, which are a recurrent theme in his work. He is considered to be one of the four EBAI graduates who made a career in Paris, including Mai Trung Thứ, Vũ Cao Đàm and female painter Lê Thị Lựu. He painted scenery of Vietnam, still life with flowers, family settings and portraits. Vietnamese women, most often portrayed as elongated figures evoking the influence of surrealism, are a recurrent theme in his work.
