Ling Jian is a contemporary Chinese painter best known for his portraits of Asian women in surreal, sexualized environments. Reminiscent of the polished works of Jean-Auguste Dominique Ingres, Ling Jian’s paintings are characterized by their smooth, glossy surfaces and their focus on the female form. Ling Jian was born in Shandong Province, China in 1963. He attended Qinghua University Art College in Beijing and graduated in 1986. He lived and worked in Vienna and Hamburg during the 1980s, and has divided his time between Berlin and Beijing since 1996. Ling Jian’s paintings address issues of personal identity in China and examine the social and political aspects of Chinese life. He has been exhibited in a number of solo and group shows since 1991.
