Biography:
Mario Novais was a Portuguese photographer born in Lisbon, Portugal. He came from a family of photographers and started his career in the 1920s as a portraitist. In 1933, he established his own studio, Estúdio Mário Novais, which became a prominent photography studio in Portugal for over 50 years. Novais was known for his work in various genres, including fine art photography, architecture, photojournalism, advertising, and commercial photography. He participated in several exhibitions and worked with notable clients. The Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian acquired his collection of photographs in 1985, which includes over 80,000 documents from his studio's activities.
