Matías de Arteaga y Alfaro, also known as Matias de Arteaga, was a Spanish painter and engraver born in Seville around 1630. He was the son of the engraver Bartolomé Arteaga. Matías studied painting under Valdés Leal, a renowned artist known for his works such as Finis Gloriae Mundi and In Ictu Oculi.

Early Life and Training

Matías de Arteaga y Alfaro was born into a family of artists, with his father being an engraver. This exposure to art from a young age likely influenced his decision to pursue a career in painting and engraving. Under the guidance of Valdés Leal, Matías developed his skills as a painter, focusing on depicting the Virgin Mary with architectural backgrounds.

Notable Works

Two of Matías' notable altarpieces are located in the conventual church of San Pablo. He also made engravings after various works by Valdés Leal and Francisco Herrera the Younger, as well as one of St. Dominick after a drawing by Alonso Cano. Additionally, he engraved a St. Ferdinand by Murillo for La Torre Farfan's account of the Seville festival in honor of St. Ferdinand.
