Mauricio Antón Ortuzar, a Spanish paleoartist and illustrator, has been specializing in the scientific reconstruction of extinct life since his teenage years. Born in 1961 in Bilbao, Spain, he is well known for his influential paintings of hominids, extinct carnivores, and other vertebrate fossil groups.

Early Life and Career

As a teenager in Caracas (Venezuela) in the 1970s, Mauricio Antón Ortuzar became fascinated with the skeleton of the saber-tooth cat Smilodon fatalis on exhibition at the local museum. This sparked his interest in bringing fossils to life through his art. He has been working and improving his techniques ever since, focusing on felids, hominids, and other vertebrates.

Techniques and Collaborations

To create accurate and detailed illustrations, Mauricio Antón Ortuzar gathers data from extant species, travels the world extensively, works hands-on with fossils, dissects specimens donated by zoos, researches extinct species with specialists, and uses extant ecosystems as a basis for the reconstruction of past ones. He has been an advisor on paleobiology, biomechanics, animal locomotion, and habitats of extinct vertebrates for various media, including the National Geographic Society and the Discovery Channel. In 2004, he collaborated with The Fly Factory animation studios in the application of 3D modeling and animation to the reconstruction of past life. In 2006, he won the Lanzendorf PaleoArt Prize for the best scientific illustration from the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology. He has also contributed major illustrations to a museum in Bolnisi, Georgia, which was nominated for the European Museum Awards in 2022.
