Biography:
The Moravian Seminary for Young Ladies, founded in 1742, was the first Protestant boarding school for girls in what became the United States. In 1831, Gustav Grunewald, a German-born artist, immigrated to the United States and settled in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He began teaching drawing and painting at the Moravian Seminary for Young Ladies, where he worked until his death. Grunewald was an instructor of art at the seminary, and his students included young women from the United States and abroad. He is known for his contributions to the education of young women in the arts during the 19th century.
