Biography:
Pierre Corneille was a French tragedian born in Rouen, France on June 6, 1606 and died in Paris on October 1, 1684. He is considered one of the three great 17th-century French dramatists, along with Molière and Racine. Corneille's best-known play is 'Le Cid', about a medieval Spanish warrior. He was initially supported by Cardinal Richelieu, but later quarreled with him over the play 'Le Cid' and the Académie française's denunciation of it for breaching the unities. Corneille continued to write well-received tragedies for nearly forty years.
