Early Life and Artistic Beginnings
Paul Sébillot, a French folklorist, painter, and writer, was born on February 6, 1843, in Matignon, Côtes-d'Armor, France. His family, known for their devotion to the arts, encouraged his early interest in painting. After studying at the communal college of Dinan, Sébillot moved to Rennes to study jurisprudence, which he completed in Paris in 1863.
Artistic Career
- Rochers à Marée Basse (Rocks at Low Tide), his first exhibited work, was showcased at the Salon in 1870 and later in London in 1872.
- Between 1870 and 1883, fourteen of his works were displayed at the Paris Salon, and two at the Vienna World Fair in 1873.
- Sébillot's inspiration was largely drawn from the Breton landscape, reflecting his deep connection to his native province.
