Biography:
, a renowned Iraqi painter, sculptor, writer, philosopher, art critic, and art historian, was born in 1925 in Samawah, Iraq. He received his degree in social science from the Higher Institute of Teachers in Baghdad in 1948 and a diploma in painting from the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad in 1954.
Al-Said's artistic journey took him to Paris, where he studied at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts until 1959. Upon his return to Baghdad, he delved into the work of Yahya ibn Mahmud al-Wasiti, sufism, and Mansur Al-Hallaj. His artistic style gradually shifted from figurative expressions to centering on Arabic calligraphy.
Al-Said co-founded two influential art groups in Iraq: * Jama'et Baghdad lil Fann al-Hadith (The Baghdad Modern Art Group) in 1951, which aimed to achieve an artistic approach both modern and embracing of tradition. * Al Bu'd al Wahad (The One Dimension Group) in 1971, which explored the values of Arabic script in modern art.
