Antônio Francisco Soares was a Brazilian military officer and artist who was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1754 and died in 1819. He was responsible for the drawings and carriages for the festivities organized by the Vice-Roy Luís de Vasconcelos e Sousa in Rio de Janeiro in 1786. He is considered a precursor of the carnival as we know it today, as he brought innovations to the scenographic, theatrical, architectural and symbolic aspects of the street celebrations. Little is known about his biography and he is practically ignored in the Brazilian bibliography.
