Tomás José da Anunciação was a Portuguese painter born in Lisbon in 1818 and died in 1879. He was a painter of the Romantic period who specialized in animal painting, standing out in this field. Tomás José Da Anunciação began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon in 1841 but left in 1847 due to disagreements with his instructor and the school's teaching methods.
Artistic Career
From 1847 to 1849, Tomás José Da Anunciação worked as an engraver at the Arsenal do Exército. He then returned to painting and began to exhibit in Paris, Madrid, and Portugal. He was mainly known as a landscape painter and often worked with João Cristino da Silva, whom he considered his true teacher. At the Exposition Universelle (1855), he exhibited his best-known work, Cinco Artistas em Sintra, which was later purchased by King Ferdinand II.
