Biography:
Tristán De Escamilla, Luis was a Spanish painter in the mannerist style, born in Toledo, Spain in 1585 and died there in 1624. He is considered one of the best students of El Greco, and his work was influenced by Italian tenebrism.
Tristán entered the workshop of El Greco in 1603, where he remained until 1606. During this time, he imitated his teacher's style to the extent that many of his works have been attributed to El Greco and vice versa. After El Greco's son, Jorge Manuel Theotocópuli, Tristán is considered to be his principal follower.
Tristán's work is characterized by a naturalistic style that offsets the lack of realism in his figures. He introduced elements from daily life into his paintings, which were rendered in a naturalistic style. His most important works include a set of paintings made for the main altarpiece at the church of Saint Benedict of Nursia in Yepes, from approximately 1616, which includes six scenes from the life of Jesus and eight half-figures of various saints. Some of his notable works include The Martyrdom of St. Andrew, Saint Louis Distributing Alms, currently in the Louvre, and The Round of Bread and Eggs at the Museum of Santa Cruz. Tristán's work can be found in various museums, including the Museo del Prado and the Museo de El Greco in Toledo.
Tristán's post-Italian work showed the influence of the Caravaggisti and the general aesthetic approach of the Counter-Reformation. He was influenced by El Greco's unique style, and his own work has been compared to that of Jusepe de Ribera. Tristán's legacy can be seen in the works of his students, including the still-life painter Pedro de Camprobín.
