Biography:

Voula Papaioannou was a Greek photographer, known for her photography of Greece, its people and its landscape. She was born in Lamia, Greece, but grew up in Athens. She studied at the Polytechnic University of Athens and developed an interest in photography. With the outbreak of World War II, she took up documentary photography and began to photograph and document social subjects during the war. She worked as a photographer during the 1930s, concentrating at first on studies of landscapes, monuments and archaeological exhibits. The outbreak of World War II marked a turning point in her career, as she began to document the war and its impact on the civilian population. After the war, she continued to document the social and economic conditions in Greece, focusing on the lives of ordinary people. She died in Athens in 1990.
