Influenza Story - Samples of throat-washings were flown to the World Influenza Centre, London, as soon as an outbreak of influenza occurred in any part of the world. Primary isolation of the virus was undertaken by mixing the virus material with penicillin and streptomycin and injecting it into the amniotic cavity of the fertile egg. It was the job of the World Health Organization Influenza Program to identify the virus responsible for epidemics of influenza as quickly as possible in order to prepare a new vaccine from it as quickly as possible. In the Asian Influenza Epidemic of June 1957 it was known that the virus was different from all previously isolated strains within three weeks of the first reports of the outbreak.
