National gatherings, or more willingly convened by Casimir the Great - provincial gatherings (wielkopolskie and małopolskie), differed from those appearing at the end of the 14th century general sejms in that the knights present at them did not participate in the sittings, acting only as spectators or witnesses of judged cases. The presentation of the king and archbishop of Gniezno, holding the insignia of power - a long sceptre and a cross surrounded by magnates and bishops, reflects the specificity of the pre-sejm state assemblies and the functioning of the royal council.
