Moore took great pains in the creation of his pictures. He would make studies of each figure (both nude and draped), as well as separate drapery studies, and a cartoon of the overall design. The finished pictures were produced in a number of distinct stages. First, the overall design was laid out in a single colour. Then then a thin layer of colours was added. Next, hotter colours were thickly applied. A thin, transparent layer of grey was then worked over the whole picture. Moore finished by applying thin and delicate colours. The result is a superb luminosity and delicacy.
