Parthenon, Athens, Greece – (Alexander Jackson Davis) Previous Next

Artist:

Date: 1835

Technique: Watercolor

In this drawing, A. J. Davis copied an 18th-century engraving complete with measurements of the Parthenon, which he never saw. Davis added the raised base and shrubbery. The drawing may relate to the creative process of Davis’s architectural firm as it translated the Parthenon’s design into an elevated, domed Customs House for New York City.
