Baquaqua was a Muslim African man who wrote a memoir about slavery. Born in the Zooggoo region, modern-day Benin, he was enslaved and brought to Brazil in the 1840s. He worked on the streets of Recife, Pernambuco, was later sold to Rio Grande do Sul and eventually ended up in Rio de Janeiro. Around 1847, he fled to New York, where he was rescued by US abolitionists. After being freed, he converted to Christianity and published his autobiography in 1854.
