Formerly an internist and anesthesiologist who served as a physician with Project Hope and at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Haiti, Andrea Baldeck is now pursuing a career as a fine-art photographer on a full-time basis. After serving as a volunteer physician at the Schweitzer Hospital in the 1980s, she returned to the region in the mid-nineties and created her series of photographs known as The Heart of Haiti. Baldeck has described the photographs from The Heart of Haiti project as bearing testament to life in a place “where the culture is rich … the land is poor [and] “where strength, resilience and hope are tested on a daily basis.“ The title of the work is adapted from a creole proverb found in Edner A. Jeanty and O. Carl Brown’s book Parol Garumoun: Haitian Popular Wisdom.
