Bogdan Mihai Radu (b. 1979) is a Romanian painter known for his abstract landscapes, depiction of flowers and deeply colourful, textured paintings. In 2016, he paid tribute to Queen Marie of Romania with an extraordinary exhibition at Cotroceni National Museum, in which he presented a series of paintings depicting the queen’s preferred flowers at the Palaces in Bucharest and Balcic (now in Bulgaria). In this painting, surrounded by a floral repertoire of lilies (her favourite flowers), wearing white gowns, the silhouette of the queen appears wrapped in mystery. The artist captures the melancholic, poetic, solar side of the queen. Her features are not clearly rendered, enhancing the mystery with colours, shadows and light.
