Museum: Musée de Pont-Aven (Pont-Aven, France)

Technique: Gouache

Charles Filiger painted this landscape inspired by Cloisonnist and Synthetist theory while staying at Marie Henry’s inn in Le Pouldu. This gouache painting is representative of this new style. Using outlines to divide flat areas of single colour arranged in interlocking layers, Filiger translates the Breton countryside into a highly-simplified composition. This work inspired the creation of the Charles Filiger garden, which was opened on 26th March 2016 in the heart of the new Musee de Pont-Aven.
