The German-born financier and art collector Everhard Jabach appears in the company of his wife Anna-Maria and their four children in one of the grandest family portraits of the seventeenth century. Although Le Brun presents an arresting portrayal of each sitter, much of the composition is given over to Jabach and the emblems of his cultural interests, such as books, sculptures, and mathematical instruments. The artist himself appears reflected in a mirror, dipping his brush in the white paint on his palette. Le Brun’s canvas must have been executed around 1660, which also coincides with the construction of Jabach’s grand new Parisian house.
