Chōbunsai Eishi was an artist of samurai descent who also created prints, illustrating several handscrolls showing patrons traveling to the pleasure quarters of Yoshiwara. The Ukiyo-e art movement, which flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries in Japan, produced woodblock prints and paintings depicting various subjects such as female beauties, kabuki actors, sumo wrestlers, scenes from history and folk tales, travel scenes and landscapes, flora and fauna, and erotica.
In this painting, Chōbunsai Eishi added a twist by transforming some of the visitors into three of the Gods of Good Fortune—Ebisu, Daikoku, and Fukurokuju—and showing them reveling with courtesans in the bordellos. The inspiration for this theme seems to derive from a comic essay “Record of the Hidden Village” (“Kakurezato nichijōroku”). This painting is an excellent example of Ukiyo-e art, showcasing the artist's mastery of depicting scenes of pleasure and entertainment.
Eishi also created a triptych of paintings titled "Shellfish and Apparitions of the Yoshiwara Pleasure Quarter," reflecting his diverse training as a young man. The shellfish and plum branches are in Kano ink wash style, while the figures are in Ukiyo-e polychrome. This painting demonstrates how artists like Eishi used unconventional subjects to depict the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters, showcasing their creativity and artistic skills.
