The statues of the patron saints of the Trento diocese were made by the Dutch sculptor Cornelis van der Beck who engraved his name at the base of the Saint Vigilius statue, on the typical attribute of the base. Originally, they were located in the cathedral, standing next to the pillars at the entrance to the crypt of Saint Massenza. They were commissioned by the canon Francesco Alberti Poia, whose coat of arms is depicted on the bases of both statues, in a period preceding his nomination as prince bishop of Trento (1677-1689).Following the demolition of the cathedral’s crypt, the statues were moved to the back of the choir and then sent on to the museum.
