Craiglockhart War Hospital for Officers in Scotland was established in 1916 to treat cases of neurasthenia or shell shock in officers. In 1917 both Owen and Sassoon were admitted for treatment there. In Survivors, Sassoon describes a range of psychological torments commonly suffered by soldiers. For the duration of the war shell shock was treated as a temporary ailment that could be addressed by brief periods of convalescence, but in Sassoon
