The northern French commune of Carnoy was the site of intense fighting and mine explosions during the first Battle of the Somme in 1916. In his poem At Carnoy Sassoon records the preparation of troops south of the Carnoy-Mametz Road in the lead-up to an allied offensive to take Mametz Wood, or as Sassoon calls it
